The novel A New Kind of Dreaming by Anthony Eaton is the story of Jamie Riley, a teenager who was sent to prison in the small, isolated town of Port Barren for shoplifting. Port Barren is full of secrets and has a corrupt cop who does everything he can to keep them hidden. Jamie brings chaos to the city with his curious nature. This novel has as its theme the powerful and the powerless. Butcher is a ruthless cop who will do anything to remain the alpha of the city. He has a lot of power, but he abuses it in more ways than one. The butcher breaks windows and sets fire to the local school, blaming Jamie in an attempt to turn the town against him. “How about you admit that you broke the windows” (pg.66) He throws Jamie into his police van where he almost dies after being left there for so long. “Jamie began to scream and scream, repeatedly hitting the steel mesh of the cage with his fist until a trickle of blood dripped from his knuckles, finally, mercifully, he passed out once again, this time into a deep sleep” (p.70 ).
