Poetry is a form of writing that allows you to express your emotions without having to be literal in meaning. Poetry often gives a life message or a description of life as seen through the eyes of the poetic narrator. In “The Society of Dead Poets,” Mr. Keating, a creative English teacher, teaches a group of young students at a prestigious private school many life messages through poetry. Over the course of the film, Mr. Keating's teachings lead to several events that change the students' lives forever. His non-traditional teaching methods are not appreciated by the administration, which makes life at Welton Academy very difficult. The lives of Mr. Keating's students were changed forever by one man and poetry. Over the course of the film, the poetry taught by Mr. Keating and the poetry the students read during their secret meetings influence the tone, mood, and character development of each of them. The director of “The Moment of the Dead Poets” uses poetry to convey a passionate and introspective tone to the audience. As Keating says: “We don't read or write poetry because it's nice. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is full of passion." Passion is definitely an amazing emotion that makes many life events happen. The greatest passion of all is the passion for life. If you have passion for life, you can do almost anything just with sheer will. The quote: "I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deeply and suck out all the marrow of life;" describes this passion best. The Latin phrase "Carpe Diem" which means "seize the day" is also used in the film. This quote sums up many of the film's major conflicts as well as... the center of the paper... Mr. Keating truly did what he loved. He even went to class to pronounce his love for her. It takes a lot of courage for a guy to do that and Mr. Keating helped him get to that point. Mr. Keating's teaching style and his use of poetry influence the tone, mood, and way in which his students develop over the course of the film. Mr. Keating has several passionate moments with the children, usually through help of a poem. Many of Mr. Keating's goals are taught through the use of poetry. Mr. Keating not only helped them improve as students but also as human beings. Using his experiences and creating bonds with the children has really helped them improve in his classroom and in life as a whole, poetry is a beautiful art form that often gives a life message and helps people throughout their lives giving them the opportunity to vent their emotions.
