In today's society, people tend to focus a lot on women and the issues they have with their body image based on popular culture, stereotypes, and other generalizations about what a woman "should" look like." What we don't realize, however, is that men struggle with their body image just as much as women and often go unrecognized in their struggle to meet society's expectations. Males they struggle with all kinds of eating and body disorders just like women do and with the expectations placed on them by the media, by women, and even by other guys. There is an appalling lack of treatment because men's struggles are ignored and even overshadowed from women's struggles. Men also suffer the harmful effects and risks that come from the efforts they endure to change their body image, such as steroids, as well as denying that they have problems or concerns with their bodies because it may make them appear weak. to others when they are men. they should be "hard". When it comes to eating disorders, many think of girls with anorexia or bulimia trying to lose weight or achieve a certain body shape. In reality, women are not the only ones who have eating disorders, men also struggle with these disorders, although not in the same way. A recent disorder is becoming increasingly popular among young and older males today. This disorder is known by two nicknames: bigorexia for males obsessed with being bulkier and manorexia for men who desire a leaner appearance, but the medical term is muscle dysmorphia (Barker 1). Technically, muscle dysmorphia is more of a body disorder, but just like an eating disorder, the sufferer is obsessed with being strong and muscular.
