Before the Napoleonic Wars that occurred between the years 1799 and 1815, there were other conflicts in the 18th century such as the Great Northern War, the Seven Years' War, the Pugachev Rebellion, and the French Revolutionary Wars. Under the leadership of Napoleon Bonaparte, France quickly battled numerous European nations to repeatedly defeat the Austrian, Prussian, and Russian armies in the series of conflicts of the Napoleonic Wars. The War of the First Coalition, which began in 1793 and ended a few years before Napoleon took command, had problems in all European nations and in some nations in Egypt, America, and South America. This coalition comprising the nations of Russia, Great Britain, Austria, Portugal, the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Naples was formed against the French, Napoleon's nation, in 1798. The nations were unsuccessful because they did not share the same goals and in this historical period , the countries were not determined to take power over France. The Russians were under the authority of General Alexander Suvorov and the fighting took place mainly in northern Italy and Switzerland.
