Topic > Differences between homosexuality and homosexual behavior

Homosexuality (the tendency to be more sexually attracted to the same sex) is often confused with homosexual behavior (acting out on homosexuality by engaging in homosexual acts), but the two are distinctly different. Although homosexual behavior, especially in more recent years, has become an acceptable standard in our society, it is a voluntary act and a sin, but the church has the ongoing responsibility and God-given calling to love our neighbor , regardless of his sin because we too are all sinners. In light of this, we Christians should treat homosexual behavior as we would treat any other sin, condemning the sin but loving, nurturing, and holding the sinner accountable. Also within this topic is the debate between nature and nurture. Although some scientific studies have been conducted to “prove” the genetics behind homosexuality, these studies have largely been debunked, leading to strong evidence for an established causality of homosexuality. In Authentic Human Sexuality, authors Balswick and Balswick present many strong arguments in favor of the education argument, the first of which is the discussion of social learning theories on pages 98 and 99. There are five different social theories offered to support of the education position. The next section of the book discusses the neopsychoanalytic perspective on the origins of homosexuality, which I believe better encompasses the topic of education and also puts social learning theories on common ground. Both neopsychoanalytic and social learning theories suggest that there is a lack of adequate growth during the formative years in an individual's life. From this lack of adequate growth, as the neopsychoanalytic perspective explains, a natural need of parents arises... middle of the paper... understanding, however, is the invisible Church's response to homosexuals. Jesus loved sinners; in fact, he spent most of his time with sinners such as prostitutes, tax collectors, and lepers. In light of this, we Christians are essentially called by Christ through the example he gave us with his life to love homosexuals despite their sin, holding them lovingly responsible for reducing sin. Part of the greatest discomfort is that their sin is public, while most people try to hide it as best they can. We are all just as sinners as any homosexual who acts on his or her sexual desires, especially in the eyes of God. Our social perceptions, however, make homosexual behaviors seem like a more serious sin due to their unacceptable nature. In any case, we know our mission: to make disciples of all peoples, even homosexual ones.
