Hydraulic fracturing is a major producer of natural gas and oil. Although it is a major cause, hydraulic fracturing causes more problems than meets the eye. Hydraulic fracturing companies are not entirely honest with the public when it comes to contaminants in water, air and soil. Hazardous chemicals used, chemicals that infect and contaminate drinking water, and companies that do not regulate fracturing are just some of the major problems caused by hydraulic fracturing. The chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing and the damage they cause are one of the biggest topics in the anti-fracturing debate. Companies have attempted to keep the chemicals they use and the hydraulic fracturing process secret. Frank R. Spellman in “Environmental Impacts of Hydraulic Fracturing” states that hydraulic fracturing is highly dependent on the use of chemicals that are not disclosed to the public (131). There are four qualities that fracturing fluids should possess: they must be violent enough to create a fracture of adequate width, measure the distance the fluid travels to extend the length of the fracture, be able to carry large amounts of proppant material into the fracture and require a minimum amount of gelling agent to allow for easier degradation or “breakdown” and reduced costs (131-132). The main categories of fluids used in hydraulic fracturing are acids, foaming gels, gelled fluids, plain water, and potassium chloride water (132). Linear gels, a type of gelled fluids, contain biodegradable products (132). To create a fracturing gel capable of creating a fracture of the necessary width, guar powder, which is non-toxic and made from the seeds of the guar plant, is mixed with diesel fuel (132). Diesel fuel is a petroleum distillate that...... means of paper ......contains toxic chemicals underground where they believe it can cause no harm, but it is the Indians who face the consequences (750) . fracking produces thousands of gallons of natural gas per day, but the numerous safety, environmental and health risks should be considered and taken into account. Even though we are using this oil and natural gas now, there will be none left for the future. Additionally, contamination of drinking water and air is a serious problem and should be a bigger concern for businesses and government. If companies did their best to protect public health, drinking water, air and soil, and made it known what chemicals are used, more people would support hydraulic fracturing. Hydraulic fracturing companies that keep processes and chemicals secret are causing more harm than good.
