The United States overthrew 14 countries in about a century. They started with Hawaii (1893) and ended with Iraq (2003). They used force (troops) and the CIA to carry out most of the overthrows. The first era (imperial era) was caused by the economic interest of the United States which used military power to invade the territory. The second and third eras (Cold War era and Invasion era) had mostly communist factors and also some economic ones. The Cold War era used the CIA to depose foreign governments. The invasion era used American troops to overthrow governments. The United States has always looked after American businesses in foreign lands and has always acted against communist or pro-communist governments. They even went so far as to kill people they had put in power in foreign governments if they started showing pro-communist views. Hawaii was the only Imperial-era country that wanted annexation by the United States while still under their country's rule. Queen Liliuokalani. One day Queen Liliuokalani made the United States focus its attention on the Hawaiian territory. Queen Liliuokalani announced a “new constitution” under which only Hawaiian citizens had the right to vote. Queen Liliuokalani was trying to regain Native Hawaiian political power. This decision worried the American minister to Hawaii, John L. Stevens, because of all the investments the Americans had made in Hawaii. John Colburn, Hawaii's Secretary of the Interior, rushed to alert his friend Lorrin Thurston, an incendiary lawyer and anti-Royalist conspirator. John Stevens and Lorrin Thurston were bonded with one thing in mind, overthrowing Queen Liliuokalani. The Committee of Safety (Lorrin Thurston was head and included other government officials) signed the appeal...... halfway through the document...... in Honduras. The US government was aware of Sam Zemurray's intentions and should not have acted unless the coup began on American soil (which it did not). Sam Zemurray assembled a team consisting of Lee Christmas (leader), George "Machine Gun" Molony (shooter), Manuel Bonilla (future president assigned by Zemurray), and Florian Davadi (Bonilla's main assistant). Lee Christmas has conquered a city in Honduras. The United States was negotiating a deal with the president of Honduras to prevent Lee Christmas and his partners from taking further action. After negotiations failed, the United States ordered no further fighting (the Honduran government was unable to fight Lee Christmas). This forced the president to resign. Bonilla eventually assumed the presidency a year later after negotiating with the United States and rewarded Zemurray with land and benefits.
