Introduction In the twelfth chapter of Andrew J. Durbin's book Human Relations: Work-Oriented Interpersonal Skills Eleventh Edition, the focus was on helping others develop and grow. When working in a company or just in everyday life, it is important to help others. Some people are too shy or embarrassed to ask for help in certain situations, so taking the initiative to come forward and recognize the need for help is a big deal. It is important to understand the characteristics of being a caring and positive person when assisting or helping others. There are also some techniques to note when coaching and training individuals. Being a Polite and Positive Person For an individual to be successful in helping other people broaden their development, it is important to be a caring and optimistic instructor. This will promote growth and development. If an individual is always negative and puts people down as they try to learn, this will have a negative effect (Durbin, 2012). To foster a positive learning environment, you need to be positive, encouraging, and supportive. A negative environment will only discourage individuals from succeeding. In a classroom setting, students are more likely to cooperate and pay attention to a teacher who is enthusiastic about what they are teaching and how it affects them in everyday life. Durbin (2012) explains that there are three actions and attitudes that support being a nurturing person. The first is knowing that most people have a desire to grow. Everyone has the desire to improve themselves. Second, partner with a colleague inside or outside your department so the two of you can form a buddy system. It is important to have a good portion of paper and take learning style into account (Durbin, 2012). People tend to learn in many different ways, so understanding how to train everyone will be more effective if different strategies are used. Conclusion Regardless of the specific type of assistance to others (help, mentoring, coaching, training, etc.), it is important to establish a connection with the individual from the beginning. Developing that connection will further expand the knowledge and capacity for growth to come. Being a positive, supportive and nurturing person will help the individual advance in whatever areas they need assistance and/or training. Give positive feedback to the intern and always congratulate them for good results (Durbin, 2012). References DuBrin, A. J. (2012).
