Topic > Essay on the Dreyfus Affair - 1769

Throughout history, anti-Semitism has been a recurring problem in which the Dreyfus Affair was a major event. The Dreyfus Affair was a political scandal that divided France from 1890 to the early 1900s. It was a very important event in history. 1894 marked the beginning of a revolution for the Jewish people, as a Jewish-French artillery officer, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, was accused of treason (Isseroff). The charges against Dreyfus were false because he was Jewish. Following his accusation Dreyfus amassed many followers who became known as Dreyfusards and there were also those who were against him called anti-Dreyfusards (Drefler). Alfred Dreyfus was born into an upper middle class on October 9, 1859 in Mulhouse, Alsace. He was the youngest of seven children in the family. Alfred Dreyfus was an artillery officer in the French army, was of Jewish origin and was convicted of treason in 1894; these accusations became one of the most stark political scandals in history (Derfler). Dreyfus spent his early years in a textile factory in Mulhouse, but grew up in Paris alongside his younger brother Mathieu Dreyfus (Dreyfus). Dreyfus attended the Ecole Polytechnique where he graduated and obtained military training, he also attended the Ecole Supreiure de Guerre where he was recognized as a brilliant young artillery officer Dragnev 2 (Dreyfus). After attending those schools and gaining great knowledge for his military career, Dreyfus attended the Fontainebleau artillery school from 1880 to 1882, where he deepened his knowledge and specialized as an artillery officer (Dreyfus). In 1882 Dreyfus was appointed lieutenant of the 31st Artillery Regiment at Le Mans (Dreyfus). In 1889 Alfred Dreyfus was promoted...... to the center of paper ......ion and inequality. An important fact that is overlooked is that the Dreyfus Affair was part of a great achievement: the peaceful uprising. The Jewish nation of Israel was inspired by Theodore Herzl, and Herzl's inspiration came from the injustice of the verdict of the scandal in which Alfred Dreyfus was involved. Reform is mostly considered a violent act to trigger rapid change, but Herzl proved otherwise. . Herzl could be seen as a reformist, he realized that the Jews might try to assimilate but would fail no matter what. Herzl was not a typical reformist, he was not violent nor did he want to start wars or revolutions. Herzl wanted to show the Jews as a peaceful and patient group who only wanted fairness in society. This is a clear characteristic of Herzl because he fought the right way for Dreyfus, instead of resorting to violence or radical reforms.
