Topic > Ethnography: musical performance - 792

Music is an interesting thing. When musicians perform there are many elements to observe that are not easily recognizable by an inexperienced person. Musical performances contain interactions between the artists, the audience, the music and the space. These come together to create a great performance. The vast majority of audiences don't even realize how much there is to observe during a musical performance. While attending a concert by the Wentzville Holt High School Symphony Band I was able to evaluate the musical sound, performance contexts, and performance interpretation. When looking at musical sound there are many different factors to note during performance. Some important things someone can pay attention to are pitch, tone, timbre, scale, rhythm, melody, quality, and shape. As I listened to the Band play, the tone of the ensemble was varied. There were moments during the performance where the tone sounded low, that's when you heard the bass instruments. However, when the other instruments joined in, the pitch sounded higher. According to Corbin Patterson, who plays trumpet in the band, "The use of standard pitch makes it possible for many instruments to play together without sounding bad or out of tune." He went on to inform me that "In some musical traditions people don't worry about having a standard pitch, on every different occasion they tune their instruments to whoever they're playing at the time." Another term associated with height is intervals. Intervals refer to the distance between two notes. An obvious example would be an octave, which contains two tones, the same note at different points in the sound spectrum, with... middle of the paper... the playing was fun and delightful and most of course also the public thought so. Musically the sound was definitely there. There wasn't much audience involvement in this type of performance, but the music was very easy to interpret and still very entertaining. A lot happens during a musical performance. The average person can't recognize most of them, but music is a very complex thing. Everything, including tones, pitches, timbre, style, and more, makes music distinct and interesting to listen to. Even similar music contains a loss of variety. Some of the things that make a performance unique are the musical sound, the contexts of the performance, and the interpretation of the performance. Without music life would be boring, that's why I always try to analyze music in all its value and grasp everything that makes it what it is.
