A renaissance among Native Americans has been underway since the 1960s, building an economic, cultural and social revival. Financial support of casinos helped, along with a civil rights focus on preserving language, spiritual traditions, and political independence (IndiaCountryTodayMediaNetwork.com). The number of Native Americans has been steadily increasing in recent decades, at least according to US census statistics. Gambling is not an economic venture just for OIN, approximately forty percent of the 562 tribes have established gambling businesses that contribute a total of approximately $15 billion each year. Similar to the Turning Stone Casino, other casino and bingo businesses also stimulate the purchase of motels, resorts, and manufacturing (113). OIN has entered the 21st century with technology, information, embracing cultural roots and connecting with its community. The OIN has opened a cultural center on the reservation near Syracuse that hosts historical and live exhibits of music, art, basketry, pottery, language and traditional dress (Gage). There is a weekly newspaper, distributed throughout the Reserve and Turning Stone properties. A college scholarship fund has been established for OIN (Gage) students. A work-to-learn program is available upon reservation to enable students to have practical professional training.
