As we run towards the field I hear the echo of the huge crowd roaring as the players enter the Texan Stadium. My team gallops behind me like wild horses ready for a stampede. I move them forward to reach their destination. Just as I reach the entrance to the dome, where the fog lifts to give that more dramatic feeling, I think back and ask myself, “What brought me here today?” “What made me who I am today?” Four years of kinesiology that pave the way for pee-wee football where everyone can play; transformed into high school football, where the best players play. With patience and a strong and persistent attitude, dedicating at least sixty or seventy hours a week and struggling with the disadvantages of having less time to spend with family. Continuously work hard to be the best; trying to reach his goal of making thirty to fifty thousand dollars a year, watching one kid after another fight for their spot on the football team. Staying up late and going through play after play just to find that one detail that will help you gain those two extra yards that can get you that touchdown and the win. This is the life of a high school coach according to coach Lance Butler; is the coach of the Wells Lady Pirate softball team. The requirements for coaches have changed over the years; Nowadays high school coaches not only have to study kinesiology, but now they also have to teach and find a class that best suits them, such as math or science, so that they have an advantage and greater job security. Coaches who teach a course also build a relationship with their players; creates a better understanding of when books come first. Coaches must have a bachelor's degree in their sport and a bachelor's degree in their subject. Think about… half the paper… a week during the season, during the off season 50 to 60 hours plus classroom prep time for whatever subject you decide to teach. The life of a high school coach is tough and you are often considered the bad guy by the players and are forced to deal with angry parents. Many coaches put so much into achieving their goals and some don't even become coaches because they are not cut out for it or they give up. You must be willing to give everything and more and be willing to take responsibility for the young men and perhaps girls who put their lives and dreams in your hands. Coaching is not a job that someone who is just looking for a job should go into; there must be passion and genuine love for the game, because remember that you are dealing with the future of every child, both in that particular sport and in life. Their future is something special.
