Elder abuse is defined as any activity carried out by an individual where these actions cause suffering to the elder, whether intentionally or unintentionally (Touhy, Jett, Boscart & McCleary, 2012, p . 378 ). Unfortunately, incidents of elder abuse continue to increase as more people enter adulthood. Interestingly, although elder abuse is under-reported, its incidence has increased threefold over a ten-year period (Friese & Collopy, 2010, p. 61). Certainly it is the nurse's duty to provide holistic care to their patients, which must include protection from abuse. Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, and financial. It is important to note that for the purposes of this article, the writer will focus solely on financial abuse. When considering the definition of financial abuse, it is believed to be the misuse of another individual's finances for one's own monetary gain. Therefore, this type of abuse has become the most common and fastest growing form of abuse overall. Therefore, it is important for all nurses to understand financial abuse and who is at risk, what it looks like, and what can be done to prevent it and protect older adults. As noted by Statistics Canada (2013), the number of older adults will more than triple by 2031, so the number of elder abuse cases will likely increase in a straight line. With this concept in mind, it seems obvious that nurses need to develop a good understanding of what this entails, including identifying those who may be most vulnerable.
