For example, we cannot invite an Islamic person to eat a pork meal, and we should not use cheek kissing as a basic greeting to Chinese people. I think before communicating with a person who has a different culture, we should do some preparation work. After my experiences living and studying in China, America and Australia, in my opinion, self-understanding is the first step to achieving effective intercultural communication. Respect, open-mindedness and wise choice of words are the golden rules when communicating with people of different cultures. (Troppello & Joanne 2015) Without mutual respect, our intercultural communications will not go well. If you want to communicate well with people from other cultures, you need to know their cultures and their differences. Sincere open-mindedness is a key factor in opening doors to intercultural communication. A word can have different meanings in different countries, especially in slang, so it's best not to use slang when talking to a foreigner. For example, "Bangers and mash" in British and Australian culture is used to describe sausages and potatoes. However, in the United States, “bangers” can mean gang members or gang members
