Nature is undoubtedly one of the most powerful forces on earth. It can be serene and amazing in one moment, but become humanity's worst enemy in the next. The Walden Pond excerpt by Henry David Thoreau beautifully describes nature and how amazing it can be to simply live in it. What Thoreau didn't take into account was America's vastly growing population and how rich the resources are. He was unable to look into the future and see how strong America would become. Human beings need to interact with each other. It is the nature of almost every living thing on earth. Wolves travel in packs, birds in flocks, and so on. It's as if that need is programmed into the mind of everything that breathes. If every person in America attempted to live as Thoreau describes, the community would suffer from population growth, isolation from needed help, and mental restrictions. Around Thoreau's time there were fewer people living in America. The free, untouched land was vast and easy to find. He says, “I went into the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to face only the essential facts of life…” (Thoreau 1). He was able to basically go into his backyard and build a cabin there. Today the population has grown so much that many people are lucky enough to have a garden. Having smaller spaces, people have learned to gather and be civil to each other. They learned to work with and around obstacles and with each other. Friendly neighbors are created; those forgotten rivals. People have learned to make others smile and cheer up the gloomier ones. If everyone had built an isolated, self-sufficient cabin in the woods, this would not have been possible. They should relate… middle of paper… create life-altering inventions. This story, for Thoreau, would not have been known and the invention might have become useless if everyone lived in isolation. Furthermore, everyone has different skills. Some can hunt while others can sew. If humanity tried to be self-sufficient, it wouldn't work. Nobody can do everything. It takes a community of diverse people combining their talents to create a better place. It's very important to have a community and not be isolated. Thoreau's ideas may be perfect for a utopian society, but the fact of the matter is that it simply cannot be achieved. Everyone is different with different skills. They have different ideas and have evolved to help and respect each other. Living in isolation is a danger to the community because people would not survive for long. It is better to have community than constant silence.
