35 Shots of RumLionel it's time to move on35 Shots of Rum directed by Claire Denis, filmed in Paris, France in 2008. This film about the transition to a state of being beyond conception, helps also to realize that moving a part of life. Lionel and Josephine are father and daughter moving towards the realization that moving forward is the best course of action for the future. Lionel has a protective instinct towards his daughter and watches her closely. Lionel has his own way of communicating in situations where he has difficulty expressing himself both facially and verbally. His ancestors were originally from Africa, a place often known for its individualistic culture. “This may be part of the cause why Lionel expressed things that were sinful to confide in others and therefore, he may have had a more individualistic but also collectivistic mindset because they focused on families.” (Collectivist and individualist cultures.) Claire Denis explains the argument “Lionel was afraid of being the only person to keep her safe because he had no one else.” (Claire Denis and Robert Davis). He had to protect her until someone came along who could protect her too. Lionel as he ages needs to abandon Josephine's help at home to allow her to experience life by making new memories. He raised her well enough to know when to stop a situation. He must trust her to make decisions and remember everything she has learned from him. Josephine and Lionel both purchase pots of rice at the beginning of the film. He takes his out and shows it to her while she happily says that it's cute and it's great that you remember... middle of paper ......and that Lionel did a good job raising her. He can go on and is able to drink whatever he wants now. Josephine and Lionel closed this chapter of their lives and opened one that kept them moving forward. They still have all the memories of the past that they will cherish forever. Works Cited Works Cited Denis, Claire and Nyman, Andrew (interviewer). "An Interview with Claire Denis." in: Countershot.
