Topic > Crossing the 38th parallel - 800

After defending against North Korea, the decision that must now be made is whether or not to go on the offensive and cross the original border at the 38th parallel. On June 25, 1950, the North Korean army crossed the 38th parallel and United Nations forces were sent to repel the attack. American forces were pushed back to the south-eastern corner of the country, without achieving the desired results. A bold move by General MacArthur turned the war on its head, the general making the decision to attack from the Inchon waterfront, near the 38th parallel and the original border. From here the US Army managed to cut off the supplies sent to the North Koreans and eventually pushed them all back to the 38th parallel. The United States' problem, and the decision Truman must make as president, is the choice to cross the border and attempt to conquer North Korea. Advising President Truman in this decision, uniting Korea under a strong democracy, and demonstrating the authority and strength of the United Nations are achievements that carry only the minimal risk of Soviet or Chinese intervention, are factors that tip the scales toward the choice to cross the border. Before World War II, Korea was a unified, independent country, but now, crossing the 38th parallel, the creation of a unified, independent, and democratic Korean government would once again be possible. This decision would not only spread democracy but create stability and peace. "Recommendations of the Security Council of June 27, 1950...that the members of the United Nations provide to the Republic of Korea such assistance as may be necessary to repel the armed attack and restore international peace and security in the area" (General of the United Nations Assembly, October 1950) This resolution taken by... middle of paper... in the world. Regarding the low risk of Soviet and Chinese intervention, one should also know that due to the desire not to start another world war and the lack of indications of actual intervention by China, these risks are worth it. If America were to proceed in such a way that it never took risks, then America would never proceed. This war is not just about a small peninsula, it is about the fight for democracy, which has been fought so hard for in the past, and is said to be fought again. President Truman, the time has come to really start fighting communism. It is advised that crossing the 38th parallel is the best course of action, unify and stabilize the Republic of Korea under democracy and demonstrate that the United Nations is a powerful part of the world, it is great assets worth the small responsibility of the Union Soviet and Chinese involvement.
