Polyphemus is a semi-human, man-eating monster with a single eye in the center of his forehead. He was called a Cyclops. He is the son of Poseidon and Thoosa and lives on an island dedicated to Cyclopes. Polyphemus means rich in songs and legends. One of the myths was that Polyphemus was in love with a sea nymph named Galateia, a Sicilian nereid who had betrayed him with a man named Acis. When Polyphemus discovered this he crushed Acis under a rock. Another myth was the story of Odysseus. This story dates back to when Polyphemus captured Odysseus, one of the victorious Greek leaders, and twelve members of his crew as they were returning home from the Trojan War. They were captured when they arrived on an unknown island of Cyclops. Odysseus and his men came across Polyphemus' cave and entered it in hopes of stealing some food while Polyphemus was away tending his flock. Curiosity got the better of Ulysses because he wanted to see what a Cyclops looked like. Odysseus and his men hid in the cave waiting for Polyphemus' return.
