A driver is sitting on the highway and his phone starts to vibrate, which lets him know that a text message has been sent to him. It could be a notification from his brother about an upcoming birthday party or an important message from the driver's mother. Traffic will move soon, but it will only take a couple of seconds to send a response. The driver begins to choose to respond and traffic begins to flow. Shortly after, the car in front of him suddenly stops and a collision occurs. Texting and driving is a very common and dangerous act for teenagers and adults and must be stopped because it is economically costly behavior, endangers the driver and others, and causes problems and distress for the families affected. it is an incredibly dangerous act committed so frequently. Today's ever-evolving society has made the use of electronic devices a necessity for all people. In 2011, 2,120 billion SMS were sent. This is a notable increase compared to just 86 billion in 2008 (Federal Communications Commission). During daylight hours each day, over 800,000 vehicles travel while the driver is texting (U.S. Department of Transportation). People between the ages of thirteen and seventeen sent an average of 3,400 messages each month. This is a discouraging statistic because these are people who are just learning to drive (Federal Communications Commission).
