According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is classified as hallucinogenic, psychedelic, and psychotomimetic. LSD is not as commonly used as nicotine and heroin, but it is still prevalent in the world today. This drug has been around for many years taking users into different worlds and offering a completely new view of the world around us. Although LSD is an illegal drug, without it some of the films, songs and works of art that many people know and love would not exist today. Many drugs don't have many beneficial effects, but LSD has some, along with some negative effects. Since the creation of LSD, scientists have gained knowledge about the effects it has on the human body and also the effects on society once released to the public. When LSD was first created it was a complete accident and its use today was unintentional. In 1938, Albert Hofmann unintentionally created LSD. This is how most medications are created; they start out as an error until a use for them is discovered. In 1943, Albert accidentally ingested LSD, discovering its effects on the human body. During this trip Albert Hofmann felt as if he were about to die, as if he had left his body together with the vision of the kaleidoscope. (Grey 97). Not everyone will feel like they are going to die, LSD affects some people differently than others, plus this was the first trip ever, so Hofmann was unaware that these symptoms would occur. Most LSD users should keep in mind the possibility of having a bad trip when using this drug. He feared he had poisoned himself, so he took a long bike ride home on April 9, which is now known by LSD users as "Bicycle Day."
