Topic > Case Study - 1482

Nursing is one of the most challenging yet rewarding professions around. It is about caring for patients, then assessing and providing support with a holistic approach, in order to improve patients' current health conditions. The purpose of this assignment is to gain a practical understanding of the nursing process and then implement this knowledge when planning and evaluating the nursing care of a chosen focus patient during a hospital admission. This document will include an overview of the consent and confidentiality process, the patient's clinical profile, a holistic nursing assessment, a nursing care plan that identifies three different nursing diagnoses, and finally a reflection on a situation that occurred during the care of a particular patient. The hospital ward associated with this case study is a 32-room inpatient care facility. Patients who are generally admitted to this facility are unable to carry out most of their daily activities, such as; nutrition, personal hygiene care and inability to move freely. Both nurses and healthcare professionals work in unison to ensure that all patient care is carried out in a professional, safe and holistic manner. When working as a nurse in the healthcare industry, patient consent is key and this is no exception when it comes to the role of a student nurse. Patient consent was required to complete the holistic assessment. The patient was asked if an in-depth holistic assessment could be completed on her covering several areas, such as spiritual, physical, emotional and mental health. The patient was informed that a pseudodeum would be used and that any other information that could identify her as the patient involved in that... half of the document... she asked me to make sure I knew every other aspect covered, I had forgotten to ask her something as basic as his clothing preferences. Communication is a key part of nursing and, as a student nurse, I will need to ensure that it is further elaborated and developed (Wright, 2012). I feel that the next time I am given the opportunity to assist someone with their daily care, I will make sure to place more emphasis on the communication aspect. Instead of relying on a patient to help guide me through their particular care or clothing preferences, I will ensure that I am equipped with all the relevant knowledge associated with their needs before carrying out their daily care – or any procedure for that matter. Additionally, if this information is not available, I will make sure the lines of communication between me and the patient are open.
