Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Games can make you lose your sense of reality and create a sense of disillusionment. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the games are immensely significant throughout the story. The mind games tear apart Gawain's perception of what is happening, deceiving him as to the truth of his situation. Sir Gawain knows this all too well from his experience with the Green Knight. The Green Knight challenges someone to cut off his head and after twelve months seeks him out to return the favor. Physical games can have the same impact as mental ones; Lady Bertilak attempts to seduce Sir Gawain. This temptation which creates a rift between what his mind knows and what he wants to do leads to greater confusion within him. She basically throws herself at him but he remains strong in his morals. These games within the novel create copious amounts of irony throughout Sir Gawain's quest. He gets involved in all these games only to later find out that it was all a hoax. His year-long quest is a tongue-in-cheek journey produced entirely by the Green Knight. Games have a huge value in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, games make Sir Gawain lose his sense of reality. Through the Green Knight's games, Sir Gawain's word is truly put to the test. The first game introduced in the story begins with the arrival of the Green Knight at Arthur's court. Many people in Arthur's court believe that it is a game organized by Arthur, but in reality it is the Green Knight who creates the game. The Green Knight gives a long speech praising Arthur and his court and offers the task of seeing if the court lives up to his praise. «I offer the axe: who will have it as his own? I'll give myself a free shot that I won't back down from, and I promise that twelve s... middle of paper...” (2383-2384). The truth of the games is finally seen, Gawain has remained true to his word for the most part, but his fear of death has forced him to cling to the belt that was supposed to protect him. In doing so, he lied to the Green Knight, but more importantly, he turned his back on his trust in God to keep him safe. It fails at the very end of the game, surpassing everything else except the decapitation. Gawain however vows to wear the belt as a symbol of his cowardice after his encounter with the Green Knight. Sir Gawain's word was tested through games that sought to break down his commitment to the code of chivalry. The Green Knight managed to not keep his word at the end of the last match. Gawain's word was the only thing tested, yet his reality became an illusion. A puppet controlled by Lord Bertilak, who pulls the strings in each new game.
