The Politics of the Crucible In Salem during the time of the witch trials everyone is politically motivated to believe that the girls' wild antics are the work of the devil, or they are so naive that they think that no child could ever maliciously despise the sanctity of the church. These are the two main reasons why girls get away with accusing people of witchcraft at first, then new reasons are introduced. After the first victims of the girls' malicious prank have been hanged, two new reasons arrive to continue accusing. The new reason why most girls keep blaming people is because if they don't then it would be the girls' fault, not Satan, that the "witches" are dead. A girl doesn't fit the mold of someone simply trying to save herself, and that girl is Abigail. Abigail doesn't want to be blamed for the deaths of innocent people, but she also has her own twisted agendas of revenge and greed that force her to keep blaming people. First she desires John Proctor and thinks that if Elisabeth were dead he will love her. He also was kind of a henchman for Mrs. Putnam and Doctor Parris, as he is eliminating Parris' enemies and blaming Rebecca Nurse for Mrs. Putnam. Obviously Parris doesn't know that killing innocent people is for him, but he does it out of a somewhat obsessive sense of faith in himself. Of course the other girls aren't entirely innocent, but they don't have much choice. If they spoke like Mary Williams, others would accuse them of witchcraft, just as they did to Mary. In my eyes the main reasons for the constant accusations were fear for one's life, and in Abigail the need to be loved by John Proctor and to serve Parris. When the girls involved in this madness grow up, I believe most of them will be normal, if a little less naive about children than the average housewife. As for Abigail, I see her committing suicide when someone else catches her at her games.
