Topic > Freudian Concepts Seen in Inception

The unconscious plays a huge role in shaping human behavior, but many overlook the idea behind it. This is the idea that perhaps these unconscious behaviors can be used to alter the future or past mistakes or anything in between. Everyone dreams at some point in their lives and what many people don't realize is that dreams usually develop from past experiences or real events and thoughts. This means that if someone happened to see a boy wearing a cowboy hat with a feather, in one of his dreams, he most likely saw this person at some point in his life and may not even have realized it. It is impossible to create a new face in a dream. In Inception (2009), Christopher Nolan portrays Dom Cobb as a special agent whose life mirrors a Freudian psychological reality in which his repressed guilt leads to self-destructive behavior. Dom Cobb puts together a team of various skilled operators and they work together to move forward. deeper into Cobb's unconscious mind. They are found through Cobb's friends and undergo semi-probationary tests before officially joining the team. This team consists of Cobb, Arthur, Ariadne, Saito, Eames, Yusuf and Mal. Arthur is Cobb's right-hand man. Arianna is the architect of the entire operation. Saito is a respectable Japanese man who took over the team. Eames is the imitator of the dream world as described by Amy Biancolli. Yusuf is the chemist who creates the sedative, which allows the team to remain unconscious for a long period of time and is also the one driving the van. Finally, the biggest influence out of all the characters is Mal. Mal is not a real living being, but is simply a memory in Cobb's mind that he can't get rid of.
