Topic > The Importance of Personal Responsibility - 1092

The author mentions how his parents sacrificed a lot for his education by removing several obstacles in his life, obstacles that most college students endure when starting their independent life , praises his parents, saying, "I'm lucky because I don't have to pay tuition, I don't have to pay a mortgage or rent, I don't have to pay for food, I eat, the clothes I wear, or even the truck I drive. Throughout I've depended on my parents for my life...", he repeats the phrase "I don't have to pay" to show viewers that, unlike his fellow students, he doesn't have to endure the brutality of paying for his own tuition, or for the food he eats or for the truck he drives. He also repeats this phrase to show that he depends on his parents for their money but also to show his viewers that their contribution makes him more independent in his studies. And thanks to their contribution towards school fees and basic necessities, he has no excuse for not being able to reach his goal. To support his point about not being given an excuse for failure, the author uses an example in which he compares himself to other students who attend college just like he does: “Compared to most students who attend university I feel lucky, because the majority work full time jobs and manage 13-15 hours of classes. These students are also mothers and fathers, who work, go to university and manage to put food on the table and clothes on shoulders of their children.” The author compares himself to these specific groups of students to show how much less he has to worry about than them which makes him more responsible for his education specific students, as one who has not reached their level of maturity and responsibility, and makes the authors' claims of independence less important.
