Applying reflection Reflection is a crucial part of the learning process and is necessary for effective learning and teaching. As a student you need to use reflective practice to better understand how you learn, as well as the positive and negative aspects of previous work, in order to improve the quality of future work. Reflective practice from the educator's perspective requires examining what worked and what did not work with the lessons and the classroom. In both circumstances, reflection is a form of self-awareness. Students who use reflective practice are better able to understand themselves and the learning process. Being able to reflect can enrich your learning and achieve deeper results. Rogers notes, “Reflecting on experience to act is a large part of the learning process” (1996, p.109). The process of reflection allows the professional to evaluate, identify and gain knowledge through experience, supporting possible improvement and transformation. not only in the classroom but in the individual who participates in the reflection. The process of reflection is a positive action that allows you to review, analyze and evaluate to develop as a student and teacher. The ability to reflect on practice helps to evaluate needs and plan their satisfaction, enriching teaching and learning skills. This article will provide an overview of the experiences I have had while using reflective practice: one from the vantage point of being a student and then subsequently as an educator. Student ReflectionAs a high school student, I have not participated in the practice of reflection at a deep and profound level. The most important reflection that occurred was what grade I got and how I could have missed that number. I remember atte… middle of the paper… an environment of open communication and collaboration” (Osterman & Kottkamp, 2004, p. 182). An educator must be able to trust colleagues to express their thoughts in a positive way to advance teaching methods. Teaching and learning is a symbiotic relationship, where you cannot teach without learning. Reflective practices allow a teacher to become a student. Although I have always said that all great teaching is learning, I have never lived the philosophy. I was a good student and a good educator. I didn't become a better student or a great educator until I combined the two and truly understood the quote. As an educator, it is important to allow students to have a voice in the classroom by addressing their needs and styles. Students are vital to the teaching process, not only as bodies filling a room, but also as actively involved partners in the process.
