The way to spend less Today we can buy anything, anytime, anywhere. We can get any information from newspapers, television, books or the Internet. At this rate, consumers are losing patience. Developing the method to avoid excessive spending and learning to control impulsive spending is becoming a necessity. Nowadays, the average household credit card debt is nine thousand dollars (Ariely 110). Surely this is proof that financial responsibility and education are necessities for today's financial environment. But with so many ways to spend money, many are learning the true meaning of the phrase that patients are a virtue. After reading "Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Divisions" chapter three "The Problem of Procrastination and Self-Control: Why We Can't Force Ourselves to Do What We Want to Do" written by Dan Ariely gives us some tips on how control ourselves. He had taught research on student self-control and procrastination at MIT. The ideas I got from the reading are that I can save money for unnecessary things by simply using the prepaid card and creating “money deposit accounts.” As you know, the prepaid card has a preset spending limit. Paying money in advance means that we cannot use the money on the card. And by doing the family accounts, I can see at a glance how much I have spent in a month. In the reading, the author says some important things, but I think the most important idea for saving money is for card users to decide how much money they want to spend in each category, in each store, and each day. By deciding how to use the money, I can set a specific goal that achieves savings. I started saving money by considering using my credit card. Before I consider using my credit card, I will explain why I should save my money. Using the money I earned, I was able to purchase some non-essential groceries such as games, party favor equipment and so on in Japan. I'm used to living like this, sometimes I have to be patient to buy things in America. In America, I have many situations to use credit card. The advantage of the credit card is that I can pay money easily and securely. The reason I have to save is that I totally rely on the money my parents pay for me.
