The Haitian people are worried about basic needs on a daily basis; clean water, food and shelter will arrive. The pain and devastation that took place during the 2010 Haiti earthquake was estimated to have affected "approximately three million people, nearly a third of the country's total population" (Paliardy), driving the country into greater poverty compared to before the earthquake. Looking at Edwards' photo, body language and story background, people were cold and selfish. Taking the money from Fabienne's lifeless hand, hitting her and moving her around and looking at her without any emotion. Fabienne's death is the image of a corrupt and insecure environment "not from the violence of nature" as an earthquake would be "but from human action". (Carroll) With the imprudent decision to shoot into the air, bringing chaos under control, to people who previously lived in poor conditions in poorly built houses and slums. “Tens of thousands lay hidden under the rubble, she lay inert and exposed on the bare roof.” Haitians live helpless and exposed due to the level of poverty, they live on less than 2 dollars a day and without any help from the government they try to get by.
