William Shakespeare is best known for writing tragedies, comedies and novels, such as Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet. Shakespeare usually wrote all his plays based on his personal life experiences. In the year 1585, Shakespeare began to take control of his life and make his work known to the world. One of his most famous books, The Merchant of Venice, described how people lived in the 1500s and how they were treated. Jessica, Shylock's only daughter, is a perfect example of how people were treated when they rebelled against their family. Although Jessica is not a main character, she is important to show how mistreated she was by her father and how she took matters into her own hands. The Merchant of Venice has many different characters, for example the suitor, the beautiful lady and of course the villain, who happens to be a Jew who lived in a Christian society called Shylock. The strange thing is that there were no Jews living in this period. This makes the audience wonder if Shakespeare actually met with a Jew, because it was not common during that time 1500...
