Topic > Analysis by Richard Russell, The Gulf of Tonkin...

This shows that not only did Russell not feel intimidated by LBJ, but LBJ welcomed Russell's views. Even though LBJ welcomes Russell as an advisor, in this tape LBJ questions sending American troops to Vietnam because the loss of an American life is also a loss. Looking back at the situation, although LBJ was wary of getting more involved in the war and Russell argued why America should not be involved, LBJ did not accept Russell's opinion and inevitably sent American troops. Therefore, it can be assessed that President Johnson is interested in listening to Russell's opinions but is still stubborn because he claims that other individuals are not in his position. Russell did not agree with entering Vietnam because he believed that the Vietnamese were not doing much to help themselves and therefore did not deserve American help. However, he believed that if the president sent American troops to Vietnam, the nation would be involved and the war would have to be a war with a large military commitment.
