Erikson's theory is a psychoanalytic theory, which identifies eight stages through which a healthy, developed person should move from childhood to late adulthood. Each stage requires a person to face and overcome new challenges. The nursing process requires that an interactive and trusting relationship exist between the nurse and the client. The shaping and reshaping theory states that one should follow a path when caring for the patient. First and foremost, a nurse must build a positive and trusting relationship with the patient. Second, the nurse should allow the patient to control and promote the strengths with which the patient feels most comfortable.
