The use of the edgework concept helps to explore divers' in-water experiences and provide a more detailed examination of how divers approach perceived risk and how they react to such circumstances . Research on divers has shown that, as with other edgework activities, before taking risks, people experienced nervousness and horror, but when underwater, divers felt a sense of calm and relaxation (Schneider el al, 2007) . If potential risks arise, the ecstatic experience will be achieved. The negotiation effort made by divers reveals their autonomy in isolating constraints and accepting associated risks. (Dimmock, 2009). However, the extent of comfort in the diving experience may decrease due to these constraints, so divers tend to use negotiation strategies to manage their comfort constraint. Three notable modes of negotiation response occurred from the divers' account of experience, classified as consolidated strategy, cooperation, and nullification. An established strategy reflects those divers who take comfort in the water and believe they have the skills and abilities necessary to maintain control of the water. a situation that "borders on total chaos". In most cases, divers see constraints as obstacles, but consider minor disturbance manageable because they prefer to stay in the water (Dimmock, 2009). According to Brown (2005), when people do not want to alter behavior and reduce estimated risk, they can improve the perception of the experience and reduce recognized risks. In this case, divers could take steps to stay calm and reconsider the current situation, or they could also shift focus to the positive aspects of being under... middle of paper... concept of work aimed at only one specific social stratum. As Lyng (2005) noted, the concept was “rooted in the unique experience of white, middle-class adult males.” (page 11). Therefore, edgework may have some significant limitations when applied to other ethnic and gender groups. Further research shows that peripheral work might be perceived in different ways by men and women, young and old, rich and poor (Lois, 2005). Another criticism of the edgework concept is that edgework is an overly simplified view for interpreting participants' actions. With reference to Donnelly's (2004) statement, since the conceptual framework is strongly influenced by the idea of Marx and Meads, edgework is rooted in the labor economy and capitalist society, consequently, the influence of social relation on one's choice to engage in voluntary risky activities has been exaggerated (Laurendeau 2008).
