Topic > An Argument for Same-Sex Marriage - 634

In a country where diversity is the key to success and freedom of speech and religion are seen as a motto, it is hard to believe that many Americans do not follow what they preach. If America is the land of opportunity and diversity, then why are so many same-sex couples shunned? If Americans support religious freedom, then the act of shunning same-sex couples because their religious views do not follow what most people believe should be put to an end. Based on this logic, society should accept these same-sex couples instead of turning its back on them in matters related to adoption and marriage. their Creator with certain inalienable rights, which among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This is one of the most famous quotes from the Declaration of Independence, but what happens when the government starts deciding who is entitled to these rights? One example of this happening is same-sex couples struggling to find approval across America for same-sex marriages. Although the Declaration of Independence states that every citizen has the right to the pursuit of happiness, the government and the vast majority of citizens of the United States do not seem to understand that happiness differs from individual to individual. Much of this controversy can be attributed to the prejudice of government officials, who are mostly Christians, whose teachings view same-sex marriage as wrong. In the case of the attempt to incorporate prayer into supplications at government meetings, “the United States Court of Appeals ruled that…public prayer amounted to an endorsement of Christianity.” This shows that laws allowing gay marriage... middle of paper... same-sex marriage open the door to absurd ideas about who and what can be legally married to. Many people argue that same-sex marriages will lead to polygamy, incest, and bestiality. The truth in this myth is that the probability of the first two events occurring is very unlikely. Studies conducted in countries that have already legalized same-sex relationships show that the demand for polygamous and incestuous marriages has not increased. The idea that same-sex relationships lead to bestiality is also completely absurd. First of all marriage is defined as a bond between consenting adults, so if a person tries to marry their dog they would have no clear way of knowing that their dog wants to marry them. Second, same-sex marriages are no more likely than heterosexual marriages to make people want to marry an animal. With such an irrational argument one can easily dismiss it.
