Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth is not based on any literacy book. Alice in Wonderland by Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson and Hamilton Luske is based on the original Alice in Wonderland story by Lewis Carroll. Neil Jordan's The Company of Wolves is an adaptation of Angela Carter's short story of the same name. All three female protagonists are evolving, physically and mentally, from girls to women. Imagination provides all three protagonists freedom from oppression and abuse. In Pan's Labyrinth, the protagonist, Ophelia is abused by her fascist stepfather and uses her mind to escape his torture. In Alice in Wonderland, the protagonist, Alice uses her imagination to break free from social norms. In The Company of Wolves, the heroine, Rosaleen frees herself from her sister's mistreatment. In Pan's Labyrinth, Alice in Wonderland, and The Company of Wolves, protagonists use anger to produce a fantasy world that mirrors the injustice of the real world and provides them with control, but ultimately their bodies become susceptible to their lies. a fantasy world that reflects the injustice they suffer in the real world. Mercedes, a housekeeper, uses Ofelia to cover up her betrayal of Captain Vidal. With affection the governess wins Ophelia's trust and therefore prevents her from speaking to the Captain. Ophelia meets a Faun in the labyrinth and is found by him. The Faun uses her to bring tranquility to the underworld and ease the king's pain of not having a daughter. In both worlds, other characters use Ophelia as a tool to achieve their own goals. On the other hand, Alice is forced by society and her sister to behave properly. At the end of the film, Alice is about to be haunted by the Queen of Hearts when she sees herself through the door and tells herself to open her eyes. Even though she is the main character of the story, this isn't apparent until she transforms into a werewolf. Through the transformation, Rosaleen gains power over herself.
