Smith thinks there should always be “power enough to command them, houses to shelter them, means to defend them, and provide for their provisions” (Smith 117 ). He is talking about how the new settlers should have control of their Indian enemies. God is not mentioned when Smith talks about this hatred towards Indians. In contrast, Winthrop's sermon states that "the law of nature can give no rules concerning enemies, for all are to be regarded as friends in the state of innocence, but the gospel commands love to an enemy" (Winthrop 216). In Winthrop's mind there is only love for enemies. He believes in following God through the Gospel. Both authors have totally opposite opinions on how an enemy should be treated
