Miley Cyrus is a cultural icon. Since he was fourteen the media has closely watched his every move. Who he comes out with, what roles he chooses and what he says. But nothing is scrutinized more than his performances; particularly Miley's performance at the MTV VMAs. Miley performed her song We Can't Stop and together with Robin Thicke performed her song Blurred Lines. This performance led to huge backlash in the media. Every new major station covered it. CTV even called in psychiatrists and media experts to analyze his performance. The morning after Miley's news she even denied Syrian war crimes. All the experts came to the same conclusion that she was out of control and was a slut. Miley has been heavily criticized for her clothing and interactions with Robin Thicke. Everyone claimed he was setting a bad example for girls; CNN even went so far as to claim that her “performance brings girls and women back” (Wallace 2013). The most common word used to describe Miley these days is the word slut. People have no problem calling Miley a slut because she's a celebrity and we think it's okay to insult her. This makes the word slut a common phrase in our everyday vocabulary. Which creates the culture of “slut-shaming,” a term coined by Lijia Gong and Alina Hoffman. They define slut shaming as an “act of criticizing or insulting individuals for their perceived sexual availability, behavior, or history as a way to shame or degrade them.” (Gong, Hoffman 580). Now we define a girl's value in society by how virtuous she is. From early childhood, women are taught to behave like ladies and dress more conservatively.
