In this experiment we explore the effects of extinction on the subject. In previous exercises, the subject received a pellet of food every time he pressed the bar. However, in this experiment, the operant chamber is modified such that no food pellets are dispensed regardless of the bar pressure that may occur. Furthermore, the pellet dispenser will also be deactivated, so the loader sound that accompanies the pressing of the bar will not be emitted. Therefore, both the primary reinforcer (food) and the secondary reinforcer (magazine sound) are removed. For these experiments, the independent variable is the reinforcement schedule and the dependent variable is the extinction rate. Reinforcement schedule refers to the schedule in which reinforcement is provided, which in this case is never, and extinction rate refers to the time it takes for an operant response to extinguish after reinforcement is no longer provided. We considered extinction to be achieved when the subject presses the bar no more than twice in a 5-min period, as shown in the cumulative
