Topic > Light versus Darkness in Shakespeare's Macbeth - 764

There are many examples of light versus darkness imagery in Macbeth. Brightness represents peace and darkness represents disastrous events or death. At the beginning of the play, the character of Macbeth was a friendly boy who could only hurt those who deserved it. He begins with a sense of innocence and only kills the king's traitors. But later she becomes eager and to take King Duncan's place she kills him. This was the turning point for him and he became a killing machine. Lady Macbeth began as a character of darkness; he desired power and did not want to express any emotion. Later she became guilty and started walking in her sleep and committed suicide. At the beginning of the play all the murders were committed with a sense of darkness. However, the situation changes when three assassins kill Banquo in the presence of light. A light example is when Lady Macbeth finds out that King Duncan is coming to the castle. He says "Come, thick night, and cover the sky in the darkest smoke of hell, so that my sharp knife does not see the wound it makes, nor the sky spy through the blanket of darkness" (I, V, 57-60 ). she is saying that she wants darkness to cover her when King Duncan is murdered. He causes Macbeth to kill Duncan because he looks too much like his father when he sleeps. Macbeth stabs King Duncan while he is sleeping but leaves the dagger in the room. Therefore Lady Macbeth has to go and retrieve it because Macbeth is too traumatized to return. After the murder, Macbeth is very nervous about people finding out if he did it. Out of anger he kills the guards; this is the first murder that Macbeth commits without consulting Lady Macbeth. The next morning Malcom and Donalbain flee the country because t...... middle of paper ...... a light example is when Lady Macbeth finds out that King Duncan is coming to the castle. She says she wants darkness to cover her when King Duncan is murdered. He causes Macbeth to kill Duncan because he looks too much like his father when he sleeps. Therefore Lady Macbeth has to go and retrieve it because Macbeth is too traumatized to return. Out of anger he kills the guards; this is the first murder that Macbeth commits without consulting Lady Macbeth. Another example of how light comes into play is when Macbeth has the two assassins kill Banquo. Macbeth tells them to kill Banquo as he is going to his party with Fleance. A second example of how the imagery of light is used is when Macbeth says "And all our yesterdays have lighted fools on the way to a dusty death." When he says "Out, out, short candle" (V, V, 26) Macbeth is saying farewell to LadyMacbeth.
