IntroductionThe year is 2013, so it's no surprise that the general public uses technology for most of their daily lives. We use it for entertainment, business and daily communication. We also use it to stay in touch with family, friends and old acquaintances. The technology has been particularly beneficial to the workplace. Telecommuting and teleconferencing are just a couple of alternatives to the old in-person work. This, and the rise of various social media sites over the past decade, have shaped the modern business world. Through these sites, people can instantly share interests, opinions, life events, and casual daily activities. With the social media movement growing rapidly every day, the amount of information flowing through cyberspace has become more difficult to contain and protect. For many, privacy is now considered a lost concept. Social media has also become an important tool to use in business and hiring processes. In the minds of human resources departments everywhere, social media sites can be considered a useful one-stop shop for determining whether or not a candidate is ideal for a job. Sites like Facebook, for example, can provide employers with detailed information about a potential employee's hobbies with just a few clicks. Some research may shed light on an individual's violent tendencies or history with bosses, supervisors, and others in higher positions. Discovering information like this can influence a candidate's personality and an employer's initial hiring decisions.
