Shogun"Shogun" is a book written by the famous writer James Clavell that tells us about the lifestyle, customs and traditions existing in feudal Japan in the 16th century and the life and adventures of a castaway English ship pilot who suddenly finds himself in medieval Japan with its rival warlords, samurai, seppuku, geishas and other things and notions that seem strange and even wild to a European man. The main characters of the book are John Blackthorne, an English ship pilot of the Dutch ship "Erasmus"; a beautiful lady Toda Buntaro Mariko who falls in love with him; Japan's most important feudal lord and warlord Yoshi Toranaga, the leader of half the country who aspires to become Shogun (a supreme military dictator); and his rival Ishido. The novel begins with the description of the violent storm that hit a Dutch ship "Erasmus" not far from the coast of Japan. British pilot Major John Blackthorne with part of his crew who managed to survive finds himself on a strange island captured by strange people who follow strange and unknown customs and codes. The ship is confiscated along with Blackthorn's stolen "rutter" protégés representing their only home on the map. Everything is strange and unknown to Blackthorne. He discovers that the city he is in is ruled by a samurai named Omi. The author describes a terrible scene where Omi beheads a farmer for nothing – for not bowing, here it is shown that in this country life costs nothing, it also shows that disrespect can cost life. The samurai Omi placed the pilot and his crew members in a pit that was used as a prison. It became clear to the samurai that the only prisoner worth dealing with was the senior pilot, Blackthorne. After the torture and death of one of the crew members and Omi's threat to harm the other members if he misbehaves, the pilot agrees to behave. And after that he will be allowed to come out of the pit. It is difficult for Japanese to pronounce "Blackthorne", so Omi renames it "Anjin" which means "pilot". When Blackthorne or Anjin realize that he has really been released from prison, he can hardly believe it. It becomes clear later that it was Toranaga who threw him in prison in order to keep him away from his enemy Ishido.
