Topic > Essay on the cost of freedom - 1078

It is society's belief that for freedom to be achieved there must be restrictions. Autonomy is valued and rare, and we believe that some need to have less freedom so that others can have more. In contrast, Nelson Mandela, a famous South African politician, stated: “For freedom is not simply throwing off one's chains, but living in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others” (Mandela 1). Each of us is capable of making a difference in the lives of others. The pacifying “rights” that society offers us should no longer satisfy. The needs of each individual, rather than the desires of a minority, should be a priority. Furthermore, physical and mental barriers no longer have to contain us. Ronald Reagan thought that “freedom is never more than one generation from extinction. We didn't pass it on to our children in our bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and passed on for them to do the same.” (Reagan 1). The beauty of being human is that we always have a choice. There is nothing we can't do, once we realize the power of a decision. Whether true freedom exists or not, whether real or imagined barriers exist, the power of choice is the key to finally solving the question of freedom. It can then be seen that free will belongs to the individual and can mean what brings him the most
