An Inspector Calls - Synopsis It is a pleasant spring night and the Birling family and Mr Croft are celebrating the engagement of their daughter Sheila to Mr Croft. Everything is going so well that the whole family is basking in their pride. There's a knock on the door, he calls an inspector. As the inspector begins to interrupt the party, we begin to understand more about the story. The inspector tells the group that there was a suicide recently; by a girl named Eva Smith. Explain to the group how their actions forced this girl to commit suicide. Mr Birling, a prosperous manufacturer, has employed Eva Smith in his factory. While working in her factory, Eva Smith went on strike demanding a pay rise which led to her dismissal. He managed to find a new job in a shop very popular with the Birling family. Sheila is the cocky little girl who was shopping there one day as she was trying on a certain garment and thought this Eva Smith was smiling at her.
