Have you ever had the desire to fit in? Well this man did. From the streets of New York to the hills of Los Angeles came Harry Lockhart. A man with a desire to fit in with people who don't want him, a man who pretends to be something he's not, and a man who fights to get "the girl who got away." All because he's new to Los Angeles. It's a relationship comedy wrapped in sharp talk and gunplay, a triumphant return for Black and one of the best films of the year." (E. Russell) a film that incorporated all of these things and more. It's a film full of dark humor, witty comments, action and even romance. Harry Lockhart has a great desire to fit in with people who want absolutely nothing to do with him. In one scene of the film, Harry approaches a group of people at a party and lights a cigarette, the group walking away with looks of disgust on their faces. Throughout the entire film he tries to make many sarcastic comments, to make people believe that he is a kind and witty guy. Harry is a type of loser who might be liked if he didn't try so hard to gain people's friendship and respect. Harry got into an argument with "Gay" PerryVanshrike, the private investigator, on the roof of his hotel. Perry told Harry that he wasn't his friend and the whole time Harry thought the two of them were friends. Harry is seen as something of a loser in Los Angeles and no matter how much he tried to be "cool" or fit in, no one wanted to accept him into their peer group. Although he eventually ends up becoming friends with Perry and his detective partner too and starts fitting in with the whole Los Angeles party scene. Harry also tries to fit in in the film by pretending to be many things he is not. At the beginning of the film he is running from the police and accidentally comes across an acting audition and succeeds, so they hired him as an aspiring actor, which again was a lie. Just before meeting Harmony Faith Lane, his high school crush, at the bar, he meets a beautiful woman who asks him what he does for a living and he replies with the answer; "I'm a detective.
