Authority and power, chaos and order are the main discourses present in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey and The Crucible by Arthur Millar. Through the context of each novel, both authors use different dialogues, plots, and situations to convey their point of view to the audience. Comparing the two texts with similarities and differences, it is clear that both authors have had a different effect on today's audiences. It would appear that both texts focus on the theme of power and loss of power, with the authors using different techniques to get their point across to the audience. Both texts will be discussed further through comparisons and contrasts and by discussing the description of the discourses present in both texts. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest written by Ken Kesey is set in an Oregon mental asylum and serves as a study of institutional process and the human mind. The novel was written in 1959 and published in 1962. The Crucible written by Arthur Millar is a 1953 play by the American playwright and is a dramatization of the Salem witch trials which took place in the Massachusetts Bay Province during the 1692 and 1693. Miller wrote the work as an allegory of McCarthyism, when the US government blacklisted accused communists. Together there are many similarities between One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Crucible, both texts are based on a surge of creativity. They are also both periods that encouraged conformity and were based on historical periods of the past. Together, the texts were set in similar times and places and the characters in both texts were also afraid of the unknown and the minority. Proctor himself was more indirect in resolving the conflict in which he did not want the events that occurred to occur . However McMurphy was trying to change the normal routine and rules of the hospital to prove that the other patients were not actually mental. In conclusion, the two texts One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Crucible share many topics and have evidently been discussed above. One of the main themes in both lyrics is power and loss of power, this theme has influenced many of the characters through the plot and situations of the lyrics.
