Once everyone heard the news that we had met at our silent construction site earlier that summer, we had built the ultimate hideout hidden in the forest. Hunter, the oldest boy in our group, said he gathered us here for a trip but we couldn't tell a soul, it was dangerous and if we were too chicken to follow him, he suggested we turn back then. Everyone looked around curiously and stood still listening to the story of the smiling puppeteer, Hunter. He told us that that morning he was walking around the old abandoned house on the other side of the river and was surprised when he heard a man calling for help from a shed very close to the house. When he got there he saw that the man was locked in the shed so he broke the lock and threw open the door, stated that the man was very grateful to him and ran towards the road at the top of the hill. Obviously curious given our ages, we started making plans and Hunter made a list of things we needed and said to meet us far enough down the path to the river so no one could see us, at 3pm. The river was visibly frozen but we still took precautions since the current has always been strong in that area, we threw stones and used sticks to feel for weak points. Of course Hunter was the leader and went first; he managed to cross it but right at the edge the ice gave way and the current quickly consumed the ice fragments. He quickly jumped and grabbed a branch right above him and jumped to safety, we were small but one by one we all followed him across the smooth snowy surface to meet him on the other side without fear. Hunter did a head check and told us we had to walk along the side of the house to get to the shed, we were... middle of paper... outmatched. We were all a little tired after returning to the clearing at the start of the path that leads to the river, my house was the closest so we all went there to clarify any trace of our proximity to the river because we all knew too well that it was forbidden . Everything had been cleaned up and everyone had gone to their homes to put away supplies and then we all met at Hannah's house for a cup of hot chocolate and ramen noodles. Later that night my mother came into the living room and I felt a flash of guilt cross my face, then she asked me how my day was and I began to feel like a mouse about to walk into a trap as she tried to find the words right. I sat there for a few seconds in mild discomfort until, of all people, my sister came and distracted my mother enough for me to walk out of the living room and say, "Nothing out of the ordinary".”.
