The desire for freedom is a similar aspect of female protagonists Louise Mallard, Mathilde Loisel, and Emily Grierson. In "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, "The Necklace" by Guy DE Maupassant" and "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, the female protagonist has a desire for freedom. The stories are about three women living in patriarchal societies. Each character desires freedom in a different way, but because of the men in their life they are unable to make their own life decisions. In "The Story of an Hour", Louise Mallard is a married woman repressed that she has a heart problem. The reaction to her husband's supposed death is a sign that she is unhappy. After hearing the tragic news, she goes upstairs to her room, looks out the open window and notices "a new spring life", " the delightful breath of rain" and "countless sparrows chirping in the gutters." As she looks out the window through the storm clouds, she gazes at glimpses of blue sky. "It was not a reflexive gaze, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought." Louise she is not saddened by her husband's death nor does she have negative thoughts about her future. She realizes that she will have freedom through her husband's death and whispers again and again, "free, free, free!"
