Define and explain globalization, then critically evaluate and illustrate the impact globalization has had on a particular company, the industry it operates in, its country of origin and the country or countries in which the business operates has expanded. In this article I will discuss how globalization has affected the music industry in recent years, and in particular the multinational giant Universal Music Group (UMG). Globalization is a difficult noun to define; it has many definitions depending on the scholar you talk to, the dictionary you refer to, and the point of view you take. The Oxford dictionary will tell you that globalization is “the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or begin to operate on an international scale” (Definition of globalization in English). People's perspectives on the definition of the word vary depending on where they were born, where they lived, the religion they follow, their social status, political ideology, cultural background, and wealth, among other things, because all of these will influence their view of globalization as a positive or negative event. My favorite definition comes from Kenichi Ochmae; a Japanese organizational theorist best known for introducing Japanese management methods, such as the just-in-time production method, to the Western world. In 1992, Ochmae stated that globalization is “the beginning of the borderless world” (Al-Rodhan, 2006). This is my favorite explanation of globalization because it is so simple to digest. Just from the phrase “world without borders” you can begin to understand exactly what globalization is, however the simplicity of this definition is also its disadvantage because it is very un…… middle of paper…… therefore, a multinational company headquartered in Paris who in 2012 rejected an offer of $8.5 billion for the company from SoftBank (Staff, 2013). Universal Music Group operates in over 60 countries worldwide, with its headquarters located in Santa Monica, California and Broadway (New York City) (FAQ, 2014). The company owns many highly successful record labels including Deutsche Grammophon Capitol Records, Decca, Def Jam Recordings, EMI Records, Interscope Records, Island Records, Mercury Records, Motown Records, Polydor Records, Republic Records, Virgin Records and many others. This places them in an extremely fortunate position in the music industry because they own many catalogs of artists who have experienced enormous fame and have the ability to attract new talented artists due to their history and the prestige attached to the label names they own..
