Topic > Performance-Enhancing Drugs in Sports - 1571

Performance-enhancing drugs should be eliminated from all sports because they create an unfair competitive advantage. I am against the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sports because it is a worldwide problem that takes away the integrity of the game. There are so many people involved including coaches, players and trainers. In the past, athletes played for the love of the game, however today players have much more at stake than simply being able to play because they love it. Athletes will use any means necessary to obtain performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). They will use team trainer or personal trainer to get these drugs. Some athletes will turn to their coach who may have the ability to provide players with PEDs. These drugs will cost athletes thousands of dollars, but for them it is a small price to pay for the success it can bring to their careers. Types of PEDs The most popular types of PEDs used are the anabolic steroids, Androstenedione (Andro) and Balco. These PEDs can come in many forms, such as an injection from a needle, a pill, a powder mixture, or even in a cream that you rub on your body and which is absorbed to increase muscle mass. One of the reasons professionals use PED so much is because the perception of professional sports is that it's okay to do anything as long as you win (Reagan, 1999). Winning is what the fans want to see and they don't really care how that happens. Side Effects There are many side effects for athletes who use PEDs. These effects are often not immediate as players in the past have not experienced any problems until long after retiring from the sport. These athletes are well aware of the consequences they face when they use drugs, but for a career and a payday that will be remembered in history it's all...half of paper...this statistic alone is alarming since they are More stringent testing policies have been implemented. The final total for 2004 was 5,451, this year the fully operational total would be around 4,000. Now 1,400 homeruns is a huge number. This loss shows that at least baseball players could reduce their PED use, which is good for the sport. This decline in success may also affect the sport's fan base. I mean, people pay there hard earned money to see a player hit long home runs and run for the big touchdown. When statistics drop, fans may lose interest in going to games. There will still be players who have the natural God-given talent to hit the long home run and run for the long touchdown, these athletes are the true stars of the game and the ones who should be looked up to by kids and their peers. Those who deceive teammates and fans by taking PEDs should be reprimanded accordingly.
