Introduction: Modernism is a word generally used to encompass "new and distinctive features in the subjects, forms, concepts, and styles of literature and other arts in the early decades of current century, but especially after the First World War." (Abrams 167) More often than not “Modernism” engages in a “deliberate and radical break” (Abrams 167) with some of the more traditional foundations of art and culture. Peter Childs in his book Modernism observes "Modernism has almost universally been regarded as a literature not just of change but of crisis" (p. 14, Unit Reader p. 12). This essay will discuss and evaluate the value of this statement through the parts of the poem "The Waste Land" and "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock", both written by the eminent poet T. S. Eliot and a short story from "Dubliners" called "Eveline " by James Joyce. Both the poems and the story celebrate in some way the practical and existing framework of life and culture and the changes contained therein. This essay will firstly discuss the poem "The Waste Land", secondly it will discuss "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" thirdly the short story "Eveline" from "Dubliners" and finally it will discuss how the discussions have contributed to broadening the understanding of the concept of Modernism. The Waste Land Section I: "The Burial of the Dead": This section of "Waste Land" can be distinguished as a modified dramatic monologue. The four speakers in this part, who are very frustrated by external circumstances (a change and a crisis) such as war, desperately need to express their hearts but find themselves surrounded by dead people. The poem uses a partial rhyme scheme. The inclusion of a language other than English makes it...... middle of paper ......through made it transform in a different way. Everything changes for her even after the decision to stay in Dublin. Modernism is a very different form of literature from those written before the First World War. Through the poems of TS Eliot and the short story of James Joyce one thing was evident; the impact of the war was the main motivation behind all three writings. Another thing that was evident was the fact that at that time people were more concerned about their individuality, which also became evident in the writings. Modernism began in a time when war had destroyed both the outside and inside of European culture and people began to think differently and new forms of achievement were embarking on. These new realizations and ideas were channeled through different forms of literature and art and formed Modernism.
