Slide 1- what is child poverty: When you hear the term child poverty, what comes to mind? (first ask the public's opinion, then give my opinion) Child poverty denies children the basic needs to survive, thrive and thrive, and deprives children of equal opportunities such as attending school, having a roof over their heads or have a family. hot meal to eat. Children who unfortunately face poverty are more likely to experience abuse, discrimination or exploitation due to their poor living conditions. “Poverty shows a strong association with particularly neglected child maltreatment. The NIS-3 study, for example, found that children from families with an annual income of less than $15,000 in 1993 were 22 times more likely to be harmed by child abuse than families with annual incomes greater than $30,000.” [1] (Once I finish explaining, I will play the introductory video on child poverty) Slide 2: During the presentation, the main international treaty related to child poverty that I will cover is the Conventions on the Rights of the Child. Does anyone know anything about this treaty? The Conventions on the Rights of the Child are a very important treaty as it was the first legally binding treaty, adopted in 1989 but entered into force in 1990, covering human rights specifically for persons under the age of 18. [2] According to the treaty, all countries must ensure that their citizens under the age of 18 have "ready access to human rights documents such as civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights". [2] (Play treaty video) Slide 3: So we know we're going to take a look at the prompt questions, if you take a look at the handout they're listed there with a blank space underneath, for your brainstorming ideas. So first I will give you a minute to gather your ideas and then we will address them as a group.Inquiry questions:Slide 4: Why does poverty still exist in the 21st century? There are several reasons why poverty exists in the 21st century, for example example: “In most nations today, inequality – the gap between rich and poor – is quite high and often widening.” [3] The large gap found between rich and poor communities plays a major role in causing poverty because some are lavished with everything while others have nothing, which is unfair.
